Local Submission
Because the topic of "Submitting Your Website to Search Engines" is so important and vital to the success for any Search Engine Optimization endeavor, we've given it it's own section. This will allow us to be able to talk about everything in more detail - and also mention that this is something you should NOT normally pay for. Every service listed below is either free or has a free option which you can use.
It's also important to note that by submitting your website to the Search Engines listed below will automatically provide listings in all of the other, lesser Search Engines. This is because the Three Major Search Engines share their data with others they are affiliated with. So there really is no need to pay someone to submit your website to "thousands of search engines" or try and get top placement through paid inclusion (which are actually scams anyway). Search Engine Submission
Google Submission
Submitting your website to Google is as simple as telling them your URL (website address), providing a comment about the website, and then entering the displayed code. This last part is done to ensure that a real person is doing the submission and not an automated software program, etc.
Yahoo! Submission
Submitting your website to Yahoo is very simple and easy. All you do is tell them the URL for either your website itself and/or a feed on your website (RSS, sitemap, etc.) and they do all the rest. You don't need to add a description or anything.
Bing (MSN) Submission
Submitting your website to Bing (which is also MSN) requires entering the letters displayed (to prevent automatic submissions) and then telling them your URL.
Directory Submission
Directories are another great place to submit your website to. Aside from the fact it gives you additional options to attract visitors to your website, directories also categorize things differently. One of the main reasons for this is that each entry in the Directory is handled by a real person and not a computer program. The more places people can find your website, the more people can come and see what it has to offer.
DMOZ Project
Website submission through DMOZ (the Open Directory Project) is more complex than doing it through a Search Engine because they need more information. Where you only need a URL essentially for the Search Engines, DMOZ has specific requirements you must follow. To learn more about what's involved, go to their submission area and see.
Yahoo! Directory
*NOT FREE* Website submission through the Yahoo! Directory requires payment of an up front fee along with an annual payment to maintain your listing. This service is not meant for individual websites and is directed to businesses only. To learn more go to the Yahoo! Directory itself and see what's all involved.
Local Submission
Local submission is for those who have a real-world [physical world] business location and want people to be able to find them using the Search Engines, Maps, etc. It is not meant for people with a strictly online presence and thus can not be used by them.
Google Local
To use Google Local you are required to have a Google account (which is free and provides a range of other options) and be signed in first. You will then need to provide the businesses information (name, address, contact info, website, etc.) along with a description of the business. That's then followed by determining which categories you want to include your business in (max of 5). After hitting the "Next" button, you will be able to upload photos and videos, specify payment options and business hours, and more. Just follow Google's instructions and you're good to go.
Yahoo! Local
Yahoo! Local also requires you to have and be signed into your Yahoo! account. It's then simply a matter of entering the information asked for. This particular method is limited to the United States only. To get "local" listing for other countries (like Canada, or the United Kingdom) you will need to provide listings through Yahoo's affiliate provider.
Bing (MSN) Local
Bing Local (like the others) requires you have a membership account and be signed in. As of writing this, we are unsure how to list outside of the United States (which is simply a matter of following the instructions and providing your companies information - just like the others) as we have no real-world location and can't use this service ourselves.
