They're Called "Keywords" Because They Are A
Key Element Of Search Engine Optimization

Keywords and Keyphrases:

A Keyword or Keyphrase is a specific word or phrase that people search for using the search engines. It is also the "topic" or focus of what is being discussed on a page. For example - the previous page uses the Keyphrase "search engine optimization" because it's the main topic being discussed on that page (others include "SEO, SERPs" etc.)

The trick to properly using Keywords / Keyphrases is to keep the focus of each page centered around the main Keywords / Keyphrase being used. It's okay to use other "lesser" Keywords, but they must all directly relate to the main topic. Failing to do so will result in the relevancy of the page to be split between the various topics and that means lesser results on the Search Engine Results Page.

In other words - "One Topic, One Page"

Website Design:

Since the primary objective of good SEO is usability, we need to ensure everything is geared that way right from the beginning - the website design itself. If the website is slow to load, difficult to navigate, and generally not very user friendly; then the usability of the website will be very low. We also have to take into account that the search bots (the things that actually surf your website to index it for the search engines) can only work with text based content (at least for now). They can't use flash animation, see pictures, or interact with JavaScript. If there isn't text to work with in the code of the page itself (all they see is the code), they have no way to see or index information from the website.

Another thing to always remember about relevancy is that the higher something is in the code of the page, the higher its relevancy. Content buried under a ton of JavaScript and Style coding becomes a lot less relevant. So how the website is designed and put together plays a huge part in getting the most from Search Engine Optimization.

SEO Content:

Content is the actual information contained on a page (whether its a written page, or the things on a webpage itself - text, video, etc.) SEO Content, on the other hand, is simply text based content written from an SEO perspective. That means that the content focuses around one primary topic and uses the same Keywords etc. scattered throughout the work.

Where this gets difficult is finding ways to use the same Keywords / Keyphrases without it sounding forced or unnatural. Sadly, in Search Engine Optimization the words being search for are the words we need to write around. We can use other words with the same basic meaning to make the work easier to read and more usable. However, it's only the exact words being searched for that allow the search engines to put our work in front of the search engine user. In the end, this means the trick is to find creative ways of using the exact Keywords / Keyphrase needed, without it looking like you are trying to use them repeatedly.

Overall Relevancy:

The Overall Relevancy of a website (or individual page) comes from the focus of the Topics being discussed. Ideally a website will have a Central Theme which consists of a Keyword or Keyphrase which specifically defines the main topic. The degree to which each addition Keyword or Topic directly connects to the Central Theme will determine the determine the actual relevancy of the website.

This has a direct bearing on Search Results as the Search Engines list everything in order of Relevancy on the Search Engine Results Page (SERPs). The more scattered the Relevancy any given website or webpage has the lower it will appear on the Search Results. This also has a direct effect of which terms it will show up for. If the focus is too scattered the Search Bots will have a hard time determining what the overall topic is, and may define it incorrectly.
